WHY I STOPPED DERMAROLLING (aka MICRONEEDLING)

So my little girl’s BDay celebration went smashingly! Here’s some pics:

Oh yes, that IS a donut tower!

I’m always on the lookout for a good beauty treatment if it has anything to do with reducing wrinkles.

So when I came across the dermaroller (or “microneedling”: seems people use the word interchangeably) I was at first hesitant (why not just rub your face on concrete?) but after watching a LOT of videos, I decided to give it a shot.

I read on multiple sites that a .5 (and smaller) needle is appropriate and safe for home use. So I bought a .5 roller.

I used this dermaroller a total of three times. It did not draw any blood. It was not even painful! After I rolled, I put on my regular regimen of products. I did this once a week for my skin to fully recover.

I microneedled my lips too, after even MORE research on that topic. My lips began to peel the second time I used it but then recovered just fine. I didn’t think anything of it.

After the third time, my lips peeled again (I could rub skin off. It was weird. Made them VERY soft.) That night after I rolled, my lips started feeling funny.

Two mornings later and my lips looked like this:

As you can see, the right area of my chin developed another cold sore and great irritation as well. The cold sore on my chin has not popped out yet in this photo.

Guys…these were BAD.

More research: I realized that “trauma” can reactivate the Herpes Simplex 1 virus. If you have ever had a cold sore in the past (or even if you have not) around 90% of Americans have been exposed to this virus. It will lie dormant UNTIL something like ahem…trauma occurs. So there you go. (There are other reasons HSV-1 can reactivate as well. Read about the virus here.)

I was in such misery, I went to the doc and she gave me antivirals for the cold sores and antibiotics for my UTI! Yes! I had them both at the same time!

When you have microneedling done at a spa or dermatologist’s office, they sometimes will prescribe an antiviral if you have experience cold sores in the past. I had not heard one thing about this in all my hours of research!

I need to let the world know that this can happen.

Now go and eat cake and feel better.

XO!
